Meeting My Blog Idol: Emily from Cupcakes & Cashmere

The start of a new year has got me thinking about my bucket list again, and how the first thing on it would be to create one. Could I get any lazier? I promise it's a 2013 goal, since writing the list won't be nearly as tough. Luckily, I got to cross one off in 2012 that was pretty spectacular...

Back in September, right before Thriving Wives officially launched, I got the opportunity of a lifetime. I finally got to meet my blogging idol, Emily Schuman from Cupcakes and Cashmere.

You see, I've been a "light" blog reader for a while, but it didn't turn into a burning passion until I discovered Cupcakes and Cashmere. There was just something about it and the author, Emily Schuman, that made me want to live inside that little piece of heaven and be her best friend. The layout was bright and clean, her photographs were perfectly curated and balanced, and her personality just sparkled throughout her writing. Plus, she is a SoCal girl originally from NorCal (like me), who had the same major as I did in college (Sociology, for the nosy ones)! I know this is bordering on creepy, but I promise this was just your run of the mill blog crush, and no actual stalking was involved.

Anxiously waiting in line!
When I found out she was having a book signing at my local Orange County mall, I knew I had to be there. I was desperate to see if she was every bit the sweet and fun girl she appeared to be (spoiler: she totes is) and tell her what a huge fan I am. The day of the signing I enlisted my friend Rachel to tag along to be my candid photographer, and seriously fretted about what to wear since Emily is so effortlessly chic herself. I arrived at Bloomingdales and eventually found the disappointingly long line, but not before grabbing some photos and a cupcake (!!!).

When my turn neared, my heart fluttered wildly because I am every bit the nervous fangirl - I am really horrible around celebrities or anyone I seriously admire. When I walked up to the table I didn't know what to do, so without speaking a word I just opened my book for her to sign, thinking she probably didn't want to hear what I had to say anyway. Of course, she looked me right in eye, held out her hand and said "Hi, I'm Emily" - I smiled and shook it, introducing myself as well. Down to earth points within seconds of meeting her: 5 million.

She signed my book while I babbled nervously about being a huge fan and inspiration for starting Thriving Wives, mentally kicking myself for not having business cards printed yet to give to her. Rachel snapped away, and I apologized for my creepy personal photographer, to which she replied it was no big deal and made some adorable remark about how at least it wasn't from an angle where she looked fat/pregnant due to her poufy dress, like some people had apparently been doing. Grinning, blushing, and awkward laughter ensued on my end.

I politely asked if we could take a photo together, which she happily obliged. Then we parted ways, with a goofy smiled plastered on my face, remarking over and over to Rachel how amazing and down to earth she was. I beamed at my signed book, and grabbed a cake pop for the road.

Thank you Emily for being such a huge inspiration and a complete sweetheart. I've really enjoyed following your career and wish you nothing but happiness and success in all your future endeavors! I hope some day we have an opportunity to meet again, and I promise to try not to be the awkward weirdo that I am.

You better believe I ate that sucker in one bite.
