Nic's Picks - Best Products for Newborns
So now that you've gotten everything you need while pregnant, hopefully you are preparing for that little nugget's arrival BEFORE he/she shows up! Here are my favorite products for the newborn stage.
2. Dex DayDreamer Infant Seat - When I used to watch babies for money, one family had this magical product called a Nap Nanny. Fast forward to when I got pregnant, and the Nap Nanny had been discontinued due to a massive recall (please people, use products as intended... read the directions/warnings!!) and I was so sad! It was a great way to prop a baby up after a feeding to reduce reflux, something lots of newborns have. BK also had a lovely bout of reflux, but it wasn't until recently (after he had far outgrown it) that I found this infant seat in a store. It looks almost the same, but with higher sides to make it a bit safer. Must have!
3. Baby K'Tan - I'm a big babywearing proponent, and with a newborn it's pretty much a necessity if you want to get ANYTHING done around the house. Babywearing has tons of benefits for baby too, so I really encourage new moms to do it. They don't call it the 4th trimester for nothing! There are tons of slings, carriers, and wraps out there, but having been a nanny I'd pretty much tried them all. The long wraps (like Moby) were too cumbersome and hot for August/September. The slings were expensive and came with a lot of warnings. We got a Baby Bjorn but BK was too little for it at first. I saw the Baby K'Tan one day in a store and put BK in it - he LOVED it! I loved how easy it was to put on/take off, but still allowed him to snuggle up close. He lived in it for 3 months straight practically.
4. Boppy Pillow - A classic choice. It's super versatile and can be used as a breastfeeding/bottle feeding pillow (although I prefer My Breast Friend while they are super small), a tummy time bolster, and a pillow for propping baby up. I love it for traveling too - I recently used it on a road trip as an over sized neck pillow!
5. Honest Co. Products - I've been a huge Honest fan since I was a nanny. They have great chemical free diapers and products, with adorable designs and pleasant scents! You can sign up for regular home deliveries for the diapers and wipes, which is great because you don't have to worry about running out to the store. They also have some of the best customer service I've ever gotten from a company, so it all makes the slightly higher price worth it. My favorite part is knowing I'm not putting harsh chemicals on my baby's delicate tush!
6. DIY Hands Free Pumping Bra - Pumping isn't fun, but it's even less fun if you have to hold the pump the entire time. You can buy hands free pumping bras for like $30, but one day I had a bright idea to just cut holes in an old sports bra instead (and apparently I'm not the only one... this pic came from somewhere else on the internet). I actually like it a lot better than the other ones because it's thin yet stretchy, so I can "manipulate" myself easier while pumping. Obviously the best part is that I get to check Instagram while getting all that liquid gold out for my precious baby!
