Thriving Weddings - Vintage Navy & Blush Estate Wedding

With wedding season upon us, we TW were inspired to start a new series....THRIVING WEDDINGS!!! We've reached out to fellow Thriving Wives as asked them to share their special day with us. Whether bridesmaid-ing it up, planning your own or simply attending. We hope you enjoy the magical moments we share each week and feel inspired when your Thriving Day arrive if it hasn't already!  We sure wish we could do ours again!

First on the list is of course our very own Nic!

Wedding date?
9.3.11

Why did you chose this date? Season or numeric preference?
We got engaged on my birthday in December, so Spring was too early and I didn't want to wait too long (I had waited 7 years for the engagement already!). It was also the Saturday of Labor Day weekend that year, so we figured it would be a good time for an anniversary and it made travel a little easier for my out of town family coming in.

"Theme" or feel of the event?
Vintage glamour! I wanted to match the antique feel of the venue, with champagne gold, blush pink and navy to keep it classy. Everything had a coordinated feel without being matchy.

Where was your venue?
The Mountain Mermaid in Topanga Canyon, CA.

Why did you choose this location?
This was maybe the second venue we checked out, and afterwards I just couldn't stop thinking about it. Not only was the space just absolutely gorgeous, it had this unique energy to it that had totally seeped into my bones. There were antiques littered throughout the property (many of them mermaid themed) but the estate had a fascinating history to it as well - at one point it had been a speakeasy in the 20's!

My sweet Martini walked (well, he was carried) down the aisle of course, and I just adored the overgrown outdoor "altar" where we said our vows. That light!

Tell us a bit about your thriving bridal party...
Almost all of my bridesmaids were friends from my college days (including Em of course), but I also included my sister in law. I let them all choose their own dresses with only a few "rules" - short hem, navy blue, and preferably a drapey or matte looking fabric (so nothing sequined or shiny). They all did a perfect job finding dresses and I loved the way it looked together! Plus, they were all able to shop within their individual budgets and for their individual shapes, something they all mentioned they appreciated.

What was the best memory from your special day?
Our "first look" was incredible. I had massive anxiety that whole morning and up until that point (we spent the night apart), but as soon as I saw him it all just melted away! He truly his my best friend on this earth, so he instantly puts me at ease.

What was your favorite moment of becoming a Thriving Wife?
Just solidifying formally what my heart had already committed to for the rest of it's life. I knew he had been the one for years, and we were finally moving forward with our happily ever after!

You don't always have to have a traditional cake! Nic had cake pops, pie pops, and cookies as her wedding dessert

What do you wish you had done differently?
I wish I had hired a real wedding coordinator. I just had a day-of person and a lot of details fell apart at the last minute. It would've relieved a lot of stress with some of my DIY stuff too, and honestly I doubt I saved that much money by doing things myself.

What advice do you have for other new TW's this season?
Take as many moments as you can savoring your wedding day. Look out onto the crowd as you stand at the altar, and soak in all that love being reflected back at you. Make time slow down during the reception, have meaningful conversations with loved ones as opposed to trying to just say "hi" to everyone there. Once the wedding starts, forget everything that's "gone wrong" because there is nothing you can do about it but enjoy this beautiful day you put so much effort into!
