Juicing Journey: Day 8

Welcome to the Juicing Journey! If you are just tuning in, please make sure you check out the series introduction, JJ Day 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and our other juicing posts here and here, so you won't miss a juicy detail!

Beets, you have some competition, there is a new pretty pink juice producer in town... blood oranges!! I didn't realize the bag I purchased at the fruit stand was full of these beasts, but I was thrilled when I started peeling... sort of.  All of a sudden I am muffling a scream as though my hands had gone numb and I had cut myself with an imaginary knife! I quickly found why they called BLOOD oranges. These fabulous fruits are not only super flavorful but oh so pretty. However, I was not so thrilled that my orange peeler (TH) was working and I was again stuck with the grunt work! Nonetheless, I had juice to make and deliver to my glorious husband. So, while a crime scene appeared in my sink and orange juice squirted all over me, I both cursed and wished my TH was there.

Finally, I juiced up: 1 bundle of kale, 1 head of green lettuce, 1 bunch of collard greens, 8 carrots, 10 apples and 7 blood oranges later I had filled my jars and they were ready for delivery.

I headed to drop off  my beautiful blood-orange recipe to my TH on the way to my manicure appointment. How I adore having days off from work...

Once back at home, I fell into the "dark place". The place in my mind where I questioned why on EARTH we were still doing this. I mean, we had made it a FULL week. My TH had been so wonderful and dedicated, I too had stuck to it and I will be honest... I wanted out and bad. While the cabinets had not been touched in a week, I could still envision the buttery, unsalted cashews in there. The perfectly salted organic flax tortilla chips...couldn't I just have one? I just didn't see what the point was anymore. We felt great, had lost weight and had definitely rebooted our systems. We got in control of food and didn't want to run to McDonalds, but we did want to chew some lettuce instead of drink it.

After hours of deliberation, I called my TH. He said he was MORE than happy to "call off" the detox... after all, he was "staaaaarving". So, we did. After 7.5 great days, we ate. I had 7 cashews and 9 flax chips. I also had 2 whole carrots with 1 Tbs of hummus. I brought my TH that deli sandwich he had been dreaming of and we looked forward to juicing some of our meals while also enjoying healthy foods.

While my little snack was amazing... I wasn't feeling too hot afterward. I laid down for a bit and then before watching a movie, I heated up some fresh apple juice, added a dash of cinnamon and headed back into juicy bliss...

So what did we learn from this experience? Come back next week for the "juicy" conclusion!
